The renovation required the complete demolition of all existing spaces and the redesign of public and private spaces throughout.
The circulation desk incorporates an elegant, no-nonsense granite counter with timeless millworking details. Tile pavers were selected for the flooring in the circulation area provide a durable material for this heavily-trafficked area. The wall covering was chosen for its acoustic sound absorption qualities. As you enter the new youth area, you move through a curved, steel frame flanked by two railroad crossing lights. As you pass through this colorful tunnel, you are immediately greeted by a 20' long locomotive engine, complete with smokestack, "cow-bumper" shelves, and a well lit reading nook. The youth desk then becomes the "coal car" of the "Berkley Reader" and the caboose houses the computers and printers. The train provides a great deal of fun and whimsy and yet integrates all functional requirements into a very tight, neatly-designed space. |
