Originally built in 1968, expanded in 1988, and totally renovated and expanded in a three-year construction project, this 100,000 s.f. library sits quietly, nestled in pines, on the corner of a very busy metropolitan thoroughfare. In contrast to the very large footprint, the library consists of a succession of intimate and engaging spaces.
Gardens at the entrance, a coffee shop, a periodical reading room with a club-like atmosphere, a business section with flat-screen tv, a local history area, a dynamic media area, a teen area complete with booths and a dedicated quiet-study room, a youth area, a large community room, three meeting rooms, a technology commons, a computer training room and 14 quiet-study rooms. Raised flooring in the adult collection supplies HVAC through floor ducts and into the shelving. Lighting is attached to the shelving for full and even light distribution to all volumes throughout the collection. Careful attention to detail is evident in the integration of organic materials such as slate, macassar ebony, maple and recyclable, ‘green’ polyresin materials. Furnishings reflect a refined, elegant and timeless approach. |
