The interior design of the renovated Howell Carnegie District Library incorporates the beautiful historic features inherent in the existing Carnegie building with a new addition that houses adult and youth services. Great care was taken to specify finishes that were respectful of the buildings history, and brought the tones and textures from this building's granite exterior into the interior spaces.

Custom designed circulation and reference desks are detailed for each of their particular tasks and requirements. One-way glass separates the staff work area from the circulation desk to allow staff complete visibility and privacy at the same time. Wing-back chairs flank the fireplaces and provide private reading spaces in otherwise open areas. Windsor chairs are utilized as reading chairs which are placed around antique, refurbished tables.

In 2004, the youth area was renovated as a result of a two year fund raising campaign. A children's garden is the theme which inspired trees with falling leaves as wayfinding, multiple shades of green, and a wood pergola structure. The young adult area was enhanced with playful furnishings, neon, and a snack counter nearby.
